Three of the four confirmed R32 ties produced late winners on 29–30 June. Brazil through in stoppage time, Morocco and Paraguay on penalties, Norway in regulation. France v Sweden and Mexico v Ecuador results pending.

If you were up across Monday and Tuesday Australian time, the Round of 32 delivered exactly what the expanded bracket was built for: late goals, penalty drama, and two giants — Germany and the Netherlands — packing their bags before the second week. Here is the wrap, the scorers, and what it means for the Socceroos’ path.

Brazilian players celebrating a stoppage-time winner at a packed floodlit World Cup stadium
Casemiro and Martinelli sent Brazil through to the R16 against Norway.
Brazil, Paraguay, Morocco and Norway are into the Round of 16. Japan, Germany, the Netherlands and Côte d’Ivoire are out. France v Sweden and Mexico v Ecuador results were not in yet.

Brazil 2-1 Japan (29 Jun, Houston)

Casemiro’s 56th-minute strike and Gabriel Martinelli’s 90+6′ winner sent Brazil into the R16 at NRG Stadium. Sano had put Japan ahead in the 29th minute, and the Samurai Blue looked set to take it to extra time before Martinelli’s late intervention. Brazil will face Norway at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, on Sunday 5 July (6:00 AM AEST Mon 6 Jul).

Germany 1-1 Paraguay (29 Jun, Foxborough) — Paraguay win 4-3 on pens

Four-time champions Germany are out. Enciso opened the scoring late in the first half and Kai Havertz equalised in the 52nd minute, but GK Gill saved two penalties and Canale converted the decisive kick to send Paraguay through. The South Americans will meet the winner of France v Sweden in Philadelphia on Saturday 4 July.

Netherlands 1-1 Morocco (29 Jun, Monterrey) — Morocco win 3-2 on pens

Cody Gakpo headed the Netherlands in front in the 72nd minute, but Ismaël Diop’s 91st-minute equaliser forced extra time. In the shootout, Yassine Bounou saved Summerville’s spot kick and Saïbari converted the decisive penalty to book Morocco’s R16 date with Canada at NRG Stadium, Houston, on Saturday 4 July.

Côte d’Ivoire 1-2 Norway (30 Jun, Arlington)

Antonio Nusa (39′) and Erling Haaland (86′) gave Norway the win at AT&T Stadium, with Amad Diallo’s 74th-minute reply not enough for the Elephants. Haaland’s strike was his fifth of the tournament — one behind Messi in the Golden Boot race. Norway now face Brazil on Sunday 5 July.
